Of Air and Amnion

About a month ago I had a unique opportunity to photograph a dance work by Johanna Kirk, of University of Iowa.  The choreography of the piece constituted her Master’s thesis.   The work featured some very beautiful silk paintings by my friend and fellow birth worker, Monica Basile, and while you cannot experience it here, some very beautiful music by Jason Gregory of the UI music department.  This is what the program has to say about the piece:

of air and amnion is inspired by the biological and social choreographies of pregnancy.  It explores women’s individual and communal experiences of their bodies as they undergo the intricacies and immensities of creating life.

It was wonderful to be asked to capture this work, while a bit different from birth photography, it was really fun to try to capture this piece, as I would a birth… striving to share the story of the dance through photos.

I am still working on the slide show, but here are a few previews:

Fall Family Photos {R} Family

Late fall seems to be a slow time for birth photography, but it’s an excellent time for a last shot at family photos before the Iowa winter sets in!

Birth of Baby {E.}

On Monday, October 10th I had the misfortune to miss a birth of a client (first time I missed one, but inevitable I suppose).  But misfortune turned to fortune when I was invited to photograph another birth happening that day, another client of the doula whom I would have been working with on the first birth had I made it.  I hadn’t met the parents before the birth, so it was a bit of jumping in with both feet, and when I got there Dad just gave me artistic license to capture their birth.

When I arrived, Mom was in the zone, dealing calmly and cooly with her contractions while Dad smoothed over her forehead and her doula, Jun-Nicole Matsushita of Bamboo Birth Services, was quietly guiding her through each contraction with imagery.  The room was so calm and quiet, such a peaceful atmosphere.

It wasn’t long after I arrived that Mom was ready to start pushing, so push she did.  And push.  And push.  Mom had incredible strength, but that little girl was just not coming out.  It was like watching my first birth, which in a way was very cathartic for me.  After almost 3.5 hours of pushing Mom was exhausted and asked for some assistance to get baby out, so with a quick vacuum extraction, baby E made her entrance Earthside!  Mom was amazing, after having been up all night the night before and working so hard to get that baby out, it was really inspiring to watch.  The power of a birthing mother just awes me to tears!  Thank you so much to this family for allowing a stranger to come in and capture their birth, it’s such a blessing and a privilege to get to be there.

Family Photos {B} Family

It was a gorgeous fall, and while there was a lull in birth photography, I had the privilege of working with several beautiful families to get some family photos while the weather was still nice here in Iowa City and the foliage was beautiful!
